A new poll suggests Canada may have reached the tipping point and a 66-per-cent majority favours legalizing marijuana. Hallelujah! Finally we might get a sensible public policy discussion in this country about what to do about a relatively benign substance that has been demonized and outlawed for a century yet is as readily available in schoolyards as cigarettes.

The Health Officers’ Council of BC endorsed a report Thursday from the Stop the Violence BC coalition – an organization that includes doctors and four former Vancouver mayors. The report recommends dumping pot prohibition following the failure of anti-drug laws to curb the supply and use of marijuana while wasting millions in taxpayers’ dollars.

Neither Ripley nor countless New Mexico residents would believe it, but Republican Gov. Susana Martinez signed a marijuana bill on Monday. Martinez, who was a prosecutor for 25 years, spent half her lifetime fighting the war on drugs.

Elected lawmakers in five states have a message for the federal government: Don’t interfere with state medical marijuana laws. In an open letter to the federal government, lawmakers from both sides of the political aisle called on the government to stop using scarce law enforcement resources on taking pot away from medical marijuana patients.

Media reports that some pot growers will face harsher mandatory-minimum sentences than child rapists under the Conservative government’s new crime bill were enough to catch the attention of Prime Minister Stephen Harper. A request by The Canadian Press for cabinet records on the controversial omnibus crime legislation turned up a single document – — much of it blacked out under a broad,
